Message from the President

Dear Colleague,

　I am truly honored to have been appointed the ninth president of the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences (JSPHCS) succeeding former president Kojiro Yamamoto. I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continued deep understanding and the warm support shown for the Society’s activities. I would also like to extend greetings to everyone as I assume the position of president.

　The JSPHCS was established in June 1990 as the Hospital Pharmaceutical Society of Japan and renamed the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences in January 2001. The Society became a general incorporated association in December 2008. From an initial membership of 1,227, the Society has grown significantly and now has over 14,000 members as of 2024, making it the largest academic organization in the fields of pharmaceutical health care and sciences in Japan.

　The JSPHCS mission is to promote the advancement and dissemination of pharmaceutical health care and sciences through the presentation of research findings on theoretical principles and applications, the exchange of knowledge, and collaboration among members, as well as with related academic societies in Japan and internationally. Through these activities, the goal of the Society is to contribute to the development of an academic culture and the improvement of public welfare in Japan.
　To fulfill this mission, the JSPHCS is involved in a number of activities, including the organization of such academic meetings and workshops as the Annual Meeting, Freshers Conference, and JSPHCS Public Symposium; publication of academic journals and books, including the Journal of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences (JPHCS) and the Japanese journal Iryo-Yakugaku; and the administration of various board certification systems for specialist pharmacists.

　In November 2026, during my first year as president, the 36th Annual Meeting of the JSPHCS will be held in Kanazawa. The theme of this meeting is “Integrative Research of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences to Address Social Issues in 2040 — Building an Academic Platform That Brings Together All Pharmacists.”
Looking ahead to 2040, Japan will face a range of complex and interrelated challenges, including changes in the demographic structure from a rapidly aging population, declining birth rates, and the sharp decrease in the working-age population; the strain on social security systems of health care and long-term care; a decline in local governance; the erosion of social capital; and widening regional disparities. Addressing these issues will require the promotion of interdisciplinary and integrative research, including the following:
・ Development of healthcare workforce models supporting new regional healthcare systems
・ Redesign of the roles of pharmacists with outcome-based evaluations in line with the differentiation of hospital bed functions
・ Development of collaborative care models connecting inpatient, outpatient, home care, and long-term care
・ Measurement of intervention effectiveness
・ Integration of diagnosis, treatment, and medication management
・ Use of digital transformation (DX) and ICT in health care
・ Enhancement of community-oriented pharmacy education curricula
・ Integrated design of interprofessional education and clinical training
・ Development of career support systems and strategies to address the uneven distribution of pharmacists
・ Research that contributes to evidence-based policy recommendations

　As the president, I am committed to strengthening the JSPHCS as an open and inclusive academic platform where diverse stakeholders, including pharmacists from hospitals, clinics, community pharmacies, home care, and long-term care facilities; professionals from national and local government and public health-care facilities; researchers and educators from universities and research institutes; industry professionals from pharmaceutical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical wholesalers, pharmaceutical equipment manufacturers, medical device manufacturers, health-care information providers, logistics companies, and related sectors; as well as students, government officials, corporate researchers, clinical research coordinators (CRCs), and other health-care and welfare professionals, can come together to exchange ideas, engage in the exchange of opinions, join in discussions, learn, discover, and network.
　I sincerely ask for your continued support and cooperation in the activities and management of the JSPHCS.
