Purpose of Founding and Overview of Activities

Purpose of Establishment

The Hospital Pharmaceutical Society of Japan, the predecessor to the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences (JSPHCS), was established in June 1990, primarily through the efforts of the Japan Society of Hospital Pharmacists, Incorporated Association. In January 2001, the name was changed to the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences, and in December 2008, the Society was incorporated as the Japanese Society of Pharmaceutical Health Care and Sciences, General Incorporated Association.
The purpose of the JSPHCS is to have as members individuals involved in hospitals, pharmacies, pharmaceutical companies, pharmaceutical education institutions, government agencies, and other organization and to promote the advancement and dissemination of pharmaceutical health care and sciences through research presentations, the exchange of knowledge on the theory and application of pharmaceutical health care and sciences, and the collaboration of members and related academic societies both in Japan and abroad, thereby contributing to the development of Japan’s academic culture and the improvement of public welfare.
Medicines are essential components in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of diseases; however, improper use of medicines can result in a lack of efficacy and cause adverse effects that reduce the quality of life (QOL). In order to ensure the safe use of medicines and maximize their benefits, gathering high-quality evidence for the proper use of medicines is extremely important, as well as for pharmacists as medication experts to practice evidence-based pharmacotherapy in collaboration with other health-care professionals and stakeholders.
As an academic organization for professionals in the pharmaceutical sciences directly related to health care, the Society collects high-quality evidence for the proper use of medicines through research and education and contributes to the advancement of academic knowledge and the improvement of public welfare.
